Hi! My name is Malena Peters, the founder. Welcome to Sci Youth Mag!
I started SciYouthMag together with my classmate and friend, Karoline Spohn. We’re seniors attending Bundesgymnaisum 13 Fichtnergasse and we’re both interested in pursuing STEM fields after graduating.
SciYouthMag was created to serve as a collaborative, blog-style online space, both for us to express our interests and to help others do the same. We hope that it being youth-based helps bring light to perspectives or experiences otherwise not popular in the science world. All the work published here is either written by high schoolers or about high schoolers in STEM.
The idea for SciYouthMag was sparked after Karo and I had a conversation about how difficult it could be to find other young voices within STEM fields. Particularly in Austria, where exploring career interests while in high school is not as emphasized as in the United States, it was easy to feel demoralized and almost isolated. This is– for lack of a better description– almost like a consolatory space for us to express and explore our interests further.
Additionally, we both agreed that there are some very impressive teenagers currently doing work in STEM, and wanted to commemorate that in any shape or form. We hope to cover more student achievements as this online magazine continues to grow.
Personally, I intend to pursue a degree in either biochemistry or biomedical engineering. I hope to one day make contributions within the medical world. Currently, I work as an intern at the Denny Laboratory. During the year, I am an assistant at a pediatric practice in Vienna, Austria. In my free time, I enjoy baking– with scientific precision, of course– playing the piano, and singing.
